Initially, there was the talk of testing the Qualcomm source ultrasound device, which would offer the latest technology and the best product available on the market, although the patent was accepted a few days ago for an optical fingerprint reader developed by Samsung that would also be tested in the lab.
Also, Samsung today received acceptance for a new patent filed last spring that describes an optical technology capable of transforming the entire screen into a fingerprint reader, certainly the best of all the ideas we have seen in this field and which has also been explored by other manufacturers without commercial options.
The patent describes the optical reader, similar to what we saw a few days ago, while Samsung, in this case, states that it is compatible with folding phones and also leaves designs with “notches” between the presented sketches, although it appears that Samsung will use them to make it clear that they serve in a variety of designs.
This type of technology would allow the phone to be unlocked as conveniently as possible by placing the thumb anywhere on the panel, and the apps’ interfaces could also be better customized by placing the biometric authentication box anywhere on the screen. The latter is very useful e.g. for mobile payment applications or for check-in at events or transports.
Some technologically interesting details have been uncovered, such as the need to install an energy-efficient processor that always awaits the user to touch the screen, while the main components of this scanner will be left idle so as not to exhaust the battery capacity.
