Samsung is setting up to enter the consumer PCIe 4.0 SSD market by delivering its 980 Pro SSD to the masses at speeds that outperform all existing consumer SSDs.
Samsung 980 PRO passes Korean NRRA certification
It has been confirmed that Samsung’s 980 PRO SSD from Samsung has passed the South Korean NRRA, a regulatory body that certifies electronics. Reddit user wickedplayer494 was the first to discover this list, and the Korean list confirms that 250GB, 500GB and 1TB models of the new Samsung 980 PRO SSD are planned.
The 980 PRO destroys all PCIe 4.0-based M.2 SSDs that offer sequential read speeds of 5 GB/s with a Phison driver. At CES 2020, Samsung confirmed that the new 980 PRO from Samsung will offer sequential read speeds of 6.5 GB/s and sequential write speeds of 5 GB/s. However, the performance of models with less than 1TB may be lower.
To achieve these speeds, Samsung has developed a new PCIe 4.0-compliant SSD controller, improved its V-NAND 3D to achieve higher power efficiency and access speeds, and increased the size of its V-NAND memory to 128 layers.
Like the older SSD of the Samsung 9X0 PRO series, the SSD 980 PRO is also expected to use MLC NAND, a premium NAND type that promises a longer life than the current NAND FTA.
At this time we do not know when this new PCIe 4.0 SSD will be released. We will keep you up to date.
