Ryzen 9 3950X laptop is 2X more efficient than an i9-9900K

At the end of March, we informed you about the XMG APEX 15 laptop equipped with a 16-core processor type Ryzen 9 3950X.

Ryzen 9 3950X is part of the XMG APEX 15 laptop

The Ryzen 9 3950X included in XMG APEX 15 is “special” in that it has 65W TDP (ECO mode) instead of the 105W TDP that comes as standard in that desktop processor.

XMG has conducted single-core, multi-core and efficiency tests on the Ryzen 9 3950X, in addition to the AMD offerings Ryzen 5 3600, Ryzen 7 3700X, Ryzen 9 3900 and two Intel Core offerings, the i7-9700K and the i9-9900K desktop. The tests are based on the performance ratings within the Cinebench R15 benchmark.

The performance and efficiency results

In the 105W configuration, the Ryzen 9 3950X scores 215 points with a single core and 3939 points in the multicore test. With the 65W profile, the same chip within a laptop configuration scores 195 points in the single-core test and 3301 points in the multicore test. The 105W configuration is 20% faster, but the 65W configuration in ECO mode offers a performance boost of 34% per watt, which is perfect for laptop design.

Compared to the 95W (PL1) and 210W (PL2) processors Core i9-9900K and Core i7-9700K, the 65W AMD Ryzen 9 3950X offers 3.1x and 2.3x higher power efficiency, which is absolutely amazing. Even the Ryzen 9 3900X and Ryzen 7 3700X are consistently ahead of Intel’s 9th generation, while the Ryzen 5 3600 offers better multi-core performance and 90% of the performance of the Core i7-9700K for single-core tasks, compared to the 6-core piece. It is also 50% more efficient than the Intel i7 desktop CPU.

XMG publishes even more specific data on power consumption and heat figures of its APEX 15 notebooks, confirming the excellent work of the Ryzen 3000 series in terms of power per watt. Even with the 100% load test, the Ryzen 9 3950X notebook does not achieve thermal strangulation.

The XMG laptop with the Ryzen 9 3950X, RTX 2070, 32 GB RAM and 1 TB memory will be available in the next few weeks.
