The most important improvements to the Oculus Rift S are the camera tracking system “Insight” and the update of the screen resolution. The biggest surprise is that this device is built in partnership with Lenovo and the Rift S seems to have strongly inherited Lenovo’s design spirit for its virtual reality products.
Today, Oculus announced an upgrade of its original Rift glasses, the Oculus Rift S. The renovated lenses show their evolution of the VR experience as well as the experiences from the original Rift, the Oculus Go, and the independent Oculus Quest to provide the ultimate new VR experience.
The Oculus Rift S features improved panels with 2560×1440 resolution (just like the Oculus GO), offers 40% more pixels, and improves the pixel subsystem with clusters of three instead of two. It also includes the tracking capabilities of the Oculus Quest with five cameras instead of four cameras from Oculus Quest and redesigned controllers.
The equipment improvements don’t stop, Rift S also features a new headband, integrated audio and passthrough+ technology and other improvements in comfort, weight distribution and light protection. They also implement a single-cable system for a smoother and hassle-free experience.
The first version of Oculus was introduced in 2016 at the price of 699 euros. Since then, we have seen how the technology has evolved by improving its image quality, comfort and price, which has dropped by about 200 dollars since then and improved its main features.
In addition, Lenovo was found to have been involved in the development of Oculus Rift S and to have contributed its expertise. The device will be available in the spring. The tracking system is powerful, but it seems that Oculus had some controversial decisions made to complete this product, so it remains to be seen exactly how the users’ overall response will be.
