Oculus Rift 2 dropped, Brendan Iribe leaves Facebook

Following the termination of Oculus Rift 2, Brendan Iribe left  Facebook: His vision of the future of VR viewers no longer coincides with that of the company.. Brendan Iribe, co-founder and former CEO of Oculus, has announced that he will give up the Facebook group, probably due to the cancellation of Rift 2. Apparently, the reason for the abandonment is an internal reorganization that took place last week, when Rift 2, the VR viewer for the new generation PC, was abandoned.

According to indicative evidence collected by TechCrunch, Iribe had a very different vision of the future of Oculus. As time went by, the differences became clearer and Iribe decided to go because he wasn’t interested in taking part in a race that he considered to be a downward spiral in hardware performance.

The cancellation of Rift 2 for the PC shows that Facebook is more interested in focusing its efforts on stand-alone viewers, such as the recently announced Oculus Quest, rather than PC viewers. Another TechCrunch source said that Iribe’s work will continue to be used in future projects and the company’s plans continue to include VR on PC.

Iribe is just one of the many founders of companies that have been acquired by Facebook and have left the company in recent weeks. A few weeks ago, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, founders of Instagram have left due to internal tensions. Earlier this year, co-founder of WhatsApp Jan Koum left Facebook, while it was Palmer Luckey of Oculus’s turn in early 2017.
