Nvidia RTX Voice, to Reduce Background Noise Using Artificial Intelligence

One of the worst things about answering phone calls and attending work meetings from home these days is the background noise. To prevent this problem, NVIDIA has developed a new free software called RTX Voice that eliminates background noise when you talk, and a beta version is now available online.

The application uses artificial intelligence to filter background noise not only from your audio but also from the audio you receive from others; thanks to the latter, we can have clean audio with no need for the people we’re talking to have the application installed.

This technology is already compatible with many streaming and voice chat applications: OBS, Xsplit, Discord, WebEx, Skype or Zoom, to name a few. It should be noted that the algorithm can work with both outgoing and incoming voices. We won’t give a definitive opinion on the efficiency of the thing, but in the few discordant conversations we had, the filter corrected the voices of our interlocutors in a relevant way, if our own voices were free from keyboard noise or ambient noise (TV, outside noise, etc…).

“Since it’s a 100% artificial intelligence-based application, it runs on the GPU’s Tensor Cores. Therefore, it requires an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20 series graphics processor, Windows 10 and GeForce R410 or newer drivers.”

Apart from the desire to set the standard in terms of graphics performance, RTX cards and thus the Turing architecture were primarily a technological gamble. The idea that a GPU could rely on more than just the sum of the good old CUDA cores and high operating frequencies.

This vision led to the RT and Tensor cores, with the former intended for raytracing rendering, while the latter had to use inference algorithms. Originally, the tensor cores were only used for DLSS, which limited their range. But obviously Nvidia has much greater ambitions for their future generations.

RTX Voice runs in conjunction with your meeting software. If you are interested in learning more, you can find the download link here.
