SteamOS was a great project by Valve to make video games less dependent on Windows, it is a Linux-based operating system and oriented to video games. Its perfect complement was the Steam Machines, a new concept of game consoles that has ended up being one of the most significant failures in the industry.
The Steam Machines are finally buried by Valve
The Steam Machines represented a new concept of video game consoles with the SteamOS operating system and upgradeable components, so you can say that they were a mix of a traditional console and the PC, to try to unite the best of both worlds.
Valve has now removed the Steam Machines section of Steam, which is a clear indication that the project has been entirely discarded. The company, undoubtedly is still a great value of Open Source, as it has released Vulkan versions of several of its games and is working to bring Vulkan to iOS / MacOS thanks to its contribution to the creation of MoltenVK.
No more Steam Machines on Valve’s popular Steam Platform
Both the SteamOS and the Steam Machines are not a failure after all because since their announcement we have seen a higher number of games portalized to the Penguin operating system, despite the fact that they still can’t even shadow the almighty Windows. Some of the most notable examples are Aspyr Media and Feral Interactive, which are carriers of most of the AAA titles that have come to Linux.
