With Pokémon Go, the American development studio Niantic introduced appealing augmented reality features two years ago. The new Niantic Real World AR platform now shows the company’s impressive progress in the extended reality.

More realistic representation of AR objects

An important aspect of AR technology is the representation of artificial elements in the real world. Sometimes they already adapted in size and sometimes also viewing angles, as they were always obviously foreign bodies. With Niantic Real World this is to change, as the developer shows in the video.

As we can see, AR objects should merge much better with reality thanks to Niantic Real World – Pokémon, for example, can then hide behind real objects. This is possible because the AR platform can identify real objects and their purposes and relationships thanks to progress in the field of artificial intelligence.

The Matrix Mill company in London, which specializes in machine vision and learning, acquired by Niantic, contributed to this development. It is the third company that the Pokémon Go developer has acquired within eight months.

Multiplayer on AR-Space

The manufacturer also wants to use Niantic Real World to build up a functioning network technology with low latency. In the future, this should also make real multiplayer games in combination with augmented reality possible.

Of particular interest: While the providers Google and Apple have meanwhile also made their AR toolkits ARCore 1.2 and ARKit 2 multiplayer capable, Niantic wants to offer a uniform and cross-platform solution.

With titles such as Ghostbusters World and Jurassic World Alive, more AR games for mobile platforms have been released in the recent past. Companies like uSensAR are working towards making augmented reality accessible to the masses.
