ARM continues to evolve its graphics for smartphones with the intention of getting closer and closer to what is offered by the dominant Adreno of Qualcomm. And the latest launch of the British company is the Mali-G52 and Mali-G31.
New Mali-G52 and Mali-G31
Mali-G52 and Mali-G31 are the most modern ARM GPUs. Also, these are intended to offer an excellent level of performance while maintaining superior energy efficiency. And these provide fast development and smaller production costs. The ARM is the third contender in this market behind Qualcomm and Imagination, although recently Apple has joined with its GPU designs.
The graphics Mali-G52 and Mali-G31 will be used by a large number of SoCs for mobile devices. For examples, we can mention the MediaTek, the Exynos, the Kirin and even the Surge of Xiaomi that are giving their first throes in the market.
Also, Mali-G52 is the most powerful of the two with a configuration of between one and four graphics cores. Also, it will be the perfect complement to ARM’s advanced Cortex A75 CPU cores. Mali-G52 promises a 30% increase in “yield density” compared to the previous core G51 in the same manufacturing node. And on the other hand, energy efficiency gets a modest increase of 15%.
If we go down a step, we find the Mali-G31. That can include from one to three cores. Also, this graphics processor aims to offer an outstanding price-performance ratio in mid-range devices. In this case, it will be accompanied by Cortex A55 CPU cores with high energy efficiency. It will be 20% smaller than a G51 MP2 while offering the same performance.
The Mali graphics are not able to match the performance of the best Adreno cores, although in exchange they are present in much cheaper processors and smartphones, we will have to wait to see what the new designs are capable.
