MSI B450 Tomahawk is the most advanced of the two new boards designed for the AMD mid-range, it is a proposal with a VRM of 6 + 1 power supply phases and four slots for DDR4 memory in dual-channel configuration and in a quantity of up to 64 GB, more than enough to meet the needs of all users. Its features follow with two PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots, one of which is steel-reinforced, three PCIe 2.0 x1 slots for expansion cards, one M.2 32 Gb/s port and four SATA III 6.0 Gbps ports for high-dose storage or an optical drive.

The rear has two USB 3.1 Gen2 ports on both Type A and Type C, along with DisplayPort DVI and HDMI ports for the multitude of APUs. We detected five fan connectors with one RGB port for LED accessories, which means compatibility with MSI’s Mystic Light software. There is also a Flashback + BIOS button on the I/O panel for out-of-band motherboard firmware updates. The motherboard is also equipped with a single LAN port.

We went down one step and found the MSI B450-A PRO, a model that has been designed to be more economical than the previous one, for this has simplified the cooling of the VRM and chipset, so it will be less recommended for overclocking and more powerful processors. It maintains the same 6 + 1 phase VRM and all slots except the DVI which has been replaced by a VGA and the USB-C has been removed.

Both boards have heatsinks in the VRM and chipset, which is not the case with the Intel Coffee Lake mid-range platform and its B360 chipset. We are used to AMD motherboards always offering something more, remember that the B450 chipset also allows overclocking.
