A few months ago, Microsoft discontinued free activation support for users looking to upgrade from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10/11. This decision has resulted in various unresolved issues, causing significant dissatisfaction among the OS users.
If you have transitioned from an older version of the operating system to a new one, license authorization may be compromised when changing hardware or updating the PC’s BIOS.
Reportedly, if we change the motherboard and some other components, the activated operating system will revert to its previous version and will not update. In some cases, users have even had to purchase a new key for Windows 11.
Microsoft Responded on Activation Issues for Windows 10/11
According to an article on The Verge, a consumer contacted Microsoft via email to seek clarification on the situation. The response was straightforward: changing hardware does not violate the Windows license, assuring that there is no reason to revoke or modify the Windows 10 license.
The company is aware of user complaints and is currently conducting an investigation into these cases. Those facing technical difficulties are encouraged to contact customer support.
Microsoft’s move aimed to prevent the activation of Windows 10 and 11 keys without payment. However, it presents a significant challenge for users making frequent changes to their PCs, including BIOS updates, posing a risk that requires a swift solution.
