US memory manufacturer Micron announces the start of mass production of its new GDDR6 memory solutions, which achieve a throughput of up to 14 Gbps. This number is to be increased in the long term in order to catch up with HBM2 with the successor of GDDR5(X), while competitors are already coming closer with their chips.

Micron Technology reports have started mass production of GDDR6 memory and list chips with a capacity of 8 Gbit (1 GiByte), which should reach a throughput of 10 and 14 Gigabit per second (Gbps) at 1.25 to 1.35 Volt, depending on the version. The press release also emphasizes that the long-term target of 20 Gbps has already been reached, with which the U.S. manufacturer intends to bring itself to eye level with the competing and more expensive HBM2.

In addition to the use of graphics cards, Micron’s GDDR6 chips will also be used in the areas of artificial intelligence, network solutions and automotive and are currently also being presented at the current ISC 2018 computing trade fair in Frankfurt am Main.

With each chip designed to achieve a bandwidth of up to 64 GB/s, GDDR6 memory is significantly faster than GDDR5 memory, faster, more cost-efficient, more scalable, and the fastest memory available on the market.

“Micron pioneered the development of advanced, high-bandwidth memory solutions and continues that leadership with GDDR6. Micron demonstrated this leadership by recently achieving the performance of up to 20 GB/s in our GDDR6 solutions at ″, said Andreas Schlapka, director of the Network Computing Business Unit. Micron.

In addition to increasing performance, Micron has developed a deep partner ecosystem to enable the rapid creation of GDDR6 designs, enabling faster time-to-market for customers looking to leverage this powerful new memory technology.

With nearly 30 years of experience implementing high-speed interface designs, Rambus is the first IP provider to launch a complete GDDR6 PHY solution for the next generation of artificial intelligence, ADAS, networking and graphics applications, and continues to lead the way.

We are proud to work with Micron and other ecosystem partners to help customers accelerate the market launch of GDDR6 designs and deliver the most advanced solutions based on GDDR6 memory,” said Frank Ferro, senior director of product marketing, Rambus.
