Micron appears to be the leading supplier of GDDR6

However, since Micron is not expected to be the only supplier of GDDR6 memory chips for Nvidia’s new RTX graphics cards, the company has become the main supplier of this type of memory.

Micron will be Nvidia’s main GDDR6 storage media supplier.

The GDDR6 memory is designed to improve speeds and double the bandwidth of the GDDR5 memory and consume less power for operation. All the benefits Nvidia has taken advantage of for its new generation of Turing graphics cards. Whether AMD will follow in the footsteps of the new graphics card generation or whether they will rely on HBM2 memory, as was the case with the VEGA series, on this point it is not yet foreseeable.

Nvidia appears to have been reluctant to implement HBM2 storage. Blocking HBM’s higher cost and lower availability of higher margin products that can take advantage of this extra bandwidth, and the penetration of consumer goods by GDDR probably helped keep the bill of materials costs for your graphics cards at a relatively low level.

Today, Micron is the only company to work with Nvidia on the launch of the RTX 20 series, all of which include the new high-performance memory subsystem. Micron had already announced GDDR6 memory as a product in 2017, with samples in early 2018 and ready for mass production in June, enough time to make a good inventory of the new graphics cards coming out in September. Of course, this initial Micron leadership does not mean that they are the only suppliers to Nvidia, but there is no doubt that they will be the most relevant for at least a good while.
