LG presents new image processor “Alpha 9 Gen 2” for 2019 OLED television

Every year, LG launches a new generation of its OLED televisions, which usually end up on the shelves a few months after the turn of the year. In a press release, the company announced the first details of the 2019 models. The main topic of discussion is the new Alpha 9 Gen 2 image processor, a direct successor to the A9 processor found in last year’s televisions.

The company mentions support for high frame rate images up to 120 fps. The 2018 generation has already supported HFR, although this is limited to a few streaming services – it is still unclear whether this also applies to the new televisions or not. According to LG, the Alpha 9 Gen 2 chip should deliver a better picture through four-stage noise reduction and new algorithms to compensate for artifacts and poor color transitions. The company claims that the new color correction algorithm for the Gen 2 chip can process about seven times more color coordinates than previous OLED TVs, which should result in more realistic and natural colors.

Unfortunately LG has only lifted one corner of the veil and it’s not yet clear whether the new televisions will support HDMI 2.1. There is a very good chance that the entire product range of LG televisions 2019 will be presented at the electronics trade fair CES 2019 in January.
