In recent months AMD has revealed a lot about its plans in the processor sector and described in detail its Zen 2 EPYC CPUs and its third generation Ryzen processors based on AM4 at CES planned for the end of 2018, but has so far remained silent about its next iteration of the Ryzen Threadripper series.
Third Generation AMD Tap Confirms Ryzen 3000 Launch
In the company’s presentation to investors, AMD published a roadmap for 2019 confirming that the second generation of Ryzen PRO Mobile will arrive in the spring, while the third generation of Ryzen desktop processors will arrive in mid-2019 and the third generation threadripper will come to market some time later.
This has confirmed that the third generation Threadripper will come onto the market in 2019, although we don’t know exactly when. We expect the third generation of Ryzen Threadripper processors to go on sale at the end of the third quarter or beginning of the fourth quarter of 2019, about a year after the introduction of the second generation.
AMD is expected to use the same 7nm Zen 2 cores that are part of the third generation Ryzen and second generation EPYC, with a separate 14nm I/O chip. It is not currently known how many cores the third generation threadripper will offer, but the modular nature of AMD designs could allow us to see 64-core chips in TR4, the same number of cores as the second generation EPYC products from AMD.
