Those who use macOS know that the native Notes application is useful, whether it’s to make a short shopping list, make a quick note, or even to help in teamwork by sharing a note with others. But in addition to that, in the MacOS Notes application, it’s possible to keep individual floating notes on top of other applications’ windows so they always stay in view regardless of the application you’re currently using.
How to float a note in macOS
Floating notes are an enormously helpful and useful resource. For example, if you’re writing a report or a class assignment, they can keep the information you need in view. It is also very useful when you are looking for information online, to write down links, data, and so on. Let’s see how to float a note in macOS:
- First, open the Notes application, located in the Applications folder on your Mac or most likely in the same dock on your desktop.
- Click on the create a note button or select an existing note from the list of notes in the left pane.
- From the Notes menu bar, select Window → Float the selected note.
The Note will automatically create its own window that will remain above all other open windows in other applications and even in the Notes app itself.
If you want to disable the float feature but keep the note with its own window separate from the Notes app, simply click inside the note window and again select the Float Above it Window → to uncheck the option in the menu bar.

Remember that you can have as many note windows open as you like: simply double-click on each note in the note list and they will appear separately on the screen. You can then place them on the screen as you wish, and control which ones float or not using the menu bar option described above.
