Japan Display Inc (JDI), the well-known leading Asian manufacturer of LTPS LCD panels, has designed a new 3.25 inch LTPS TFT-LCD display designed specifically for VR devices, which promises to improve the image quality of virtual reality glasses.
JDI creates 1001 ppi screen for VR, would be used by Playstation VR
JDI has established a few years ago through the consolidation of the panel businesses of Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi. Yesterday, JDI announced the development of a 3.25-inch TFT-LCD LTPS panel designed specifically for VR applications. This panel will have 1001 pixels per inch (PPI), an update of the 803 PPI panel JDI had discussed last year. The new panel will be smaller, have higher resolution, higher refresh rate (120Hz vs. 90Hz) and even better latency.
Comparison with the new 1001ppi panels:
Panel | 803ppi LTPS TFT-LCD | 1001ppi LTPS TFT-LCD |
LCD mode | IPS designed for VR | |
Size | 3.60-inch | 3.25-inch |
Resolution | 1920 × RGB × 2160 | 2160 × RGB × 2432 |
Pixels density | 803 ppi | 1001 ppi |
Response time | 4.5msec (gray-to-gray, worst case) | 2.2msec (gray-to-gray, worst case) |
Refresh rate | 90Hz | 120Hz |
This new panel of 1001 PPIs will be presented at The Society of Information Display (SID) “Display Week”, at the Los Angeles Convention Center, starting May 22.
JDI expects to begin commercial shipping in late March 2019 and noted in the press release that the long-term goal is to accelerate the production of even higher resolution displays for VR and HMD applications.
It is quite possible that these screens are part of the new PlayStation VR, which Sony is preparing for PlayStation 5 from 2020.
