Finally, we take a first look at the extremely massive Intel Xe HP MCM-based GPU that Intel builds in its labs.
Intel Xe HP ‘The father of all’ is a GPU with a size of 3700 mm²
Both the package and an image from the test lab were tweeted some time ago by Intel’s chief architect Raja Koduri, along with the enigmatic Jim Keller. The chip shown seems to have an area of over 3000mm².
In December 2019, Raja Koduri and his team in Bangalore sent the following tweet, which represents “a significant milestone” in the construction of one of the world’s biggest silicon by far. This is the Intel Xe HP-GPU, as Raja clearly states about this GPU in his tweet, For him, it is called “baap of all”, which in Hindi/Urdu means “father of all”.
Intel Graphics’ Twitter account was in flames today because an update of the Xe GPU development was released, mentioning that the samples are ready and packed in a pretty interesting package. The processor in question was a variant of the HP Xe GPU with an estimated matrix size of 3700 mm², which means it is a multi-chip package.
It appears that this is not the version of the GPU designed for HPC workloads. This model could be a direct competitor to offerings like NVIDIA Quadro or AMD Radeon Pro.
