Intel Xe HP, more details on the high performance DG 2 GPU

In January, Intel published a paper entitled Iris Plus Graphics and UHD Graphics Open Source, published on Intel’s open-source platform. The PDF now mentions the Intel Xe Gen 12 HP graphics unit.

While there is not much discussion about the upcoming Xe graphics unit, the document mentions the “new systolic pipeline addition in the EU from Gen12 HP”. These are probably the execution units based on the Intel Gen 12 HP or Xe HP architecture. Below you can see a picture of the document.

The Gen 12 GPUs will be the first to introduce Xe architecture. Although we know little about these next chips, we do know that Intel is working on its own graphics cards that will be based on the Xe architecture. The next Tiger Lake laptop CPUs will be released later this year and will be the first with Xe-based GPUs.

We also know that the coalition with Intel has been working on transmission tactics for Intel Xe. Here’s what Microsoft had to say about that.

The speaker went on to mention the following:

It needed to scale seamlessly through thin, lightweight laptops, ultra-powerful desktops, and device configurations yet to come, including those with the Xe graphics architecture that debuted this year.

It will be interesting to see what kind of performance the next Intel Xe Gen 12 HP graphics can offer. Intel has been stagnant for some time in terms of integrated graphics, but these next chips could give you the edge you need to get back in the game and beat AMD in a segment that they do very well with their APUs.
