Intel works on new’ ‘Ocean Cove” CPUs to replace Intel Core

Intel is working on a new generation of processors to replace the Core IP core introduced in 2006 and still in use today. This new kernel would be known as Ocean Cove, as revealed on Intel’s own work list, and has now been modified.

Ocean Cove processors could arrive in 2020

A list of Intel jobs may have revealed the potential code name of its next-generation high-performance CPU core, which will be known as Ocean Cove. The new core architecture will be designed to drive the next decade of computing and help Intel reinvent the Core IP used today (SkyLake, Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake, etc).

Found on Intel’s official website, the list of jobs was posted in the Engineering section and shows that Intel was looking for Senior CPU Microarchitects to join the Ocean Cove team in Hillsboro, Oregon, USA.

We can expect the launch of Ocean Cove to fall after 2020. That probably puts it a generation behind Sapphire Rapids, which is expected to be the 11th generation core processor family.

Zen-based processors arrived last year and took the market by storm with their performance and prices, quickly taking market share away from Intel CPUs. Not for nothing has Intel taken over the services of Jim Keller, AMD’s Zen core manager, who is now responsible for creating the Ocean Cove chips for the next decade. That Intel is no longer in as comfortable a position as it was a few years ago is a good sign for users.
