Intel Rocket Lake-S: PCIe 4.0 support, Xe graphics and Thunderbolt 4

We have full details on the next Intel Rocket Lake S platform. Intel will end the year with support for PCIe 4.0 and more.

While AMD continues preparations for Zen 3, Intel is doing the same with Rocket Lake-S. The blue giant wants to win back lost ground with a platform with powerful features. Among them, we find support for PCI Express 4.0, which makes it clear what the future holds. It will also offer Intel Xe, Thunderbolt 4 and USB 3.2 graphics, among others. We know the following.

Our Videocardz partners have announced new details about Intel’s upcoming platform. So far we have seen benchmarks of processors in this family, architecture details, etc. However, an image has been leaked that describes all the main features of Intel Rocket Lake-S.

It is the motherboards with the 500 chipsets that will benefit from several features that we don’t have at the moment. Looking at the information provided by our partners, it seems that Rocket Lake-S will be an update of Comet Lake-S. Its features are as follows:

Architecture: Rocket Lake-S will have a new core architecture, but we don’t know more. According to rumors, the chips will have a 14 nm technology, which was adopted from Tiger Lake.
PCIe 4.0: adds the support that AMD has already embossed on its latest motherboards. DMI 3.0 x8: DMI is updated to x8, which means twice the transfer rate of x4. Intel has made no statement on this.
Intel Xe Graphics: Intel Rocket Lake-S will benefit from the brand’s new graphics architecture. This means that HDMI 2.0b and DisplayPort 1.4a are supported, it seems that there will be no HDMI 2.1.
Thunderbolt 4 and USB 3.2: Intel has already confirmed at CES 2020 that the Tiger Lake platform would support Thunderbolt 4. In terms of speed, there seems to be no improvement over Thunderbolt 3.
Everything points to the fact that this family of processors will arrive at the end of 2020. There is no exact date, so we’ll keep you posted on what we know.
