Intel Hires Radeon Lead Architect to Work on its Arc GPUs

Intel has officially confirmed that it’s Arc Alchemist GPUs will launch in the second quarter of this year, specifically the add-on cards that everyone is waiting for right now. The company also confirmed that it intends to ship up to 4 million discrete GPUs by 2022 alone, but keep in mind that this number also includes laptop, desktop, and workstation GPUs.

The exodus of talent is something totally common in this hardware industry, and today we have another case of the exodus of an important member of a team, in this case, from AMD to Intel. We are talking about the transfer of Rohit Verma, former Radeon Discrete GPU Lead Architect at AMD, who has just joined Raja Koduri’s team at Intel. Verma worked for 9 years at AMD and held multiple positions in the discrete GPU and custom SOC department, adding a wealth of experience to the blue team, which is clearly serious about entering this market. He previously spent 13 years at Intel, so he is already familiar with the blue company, and in fact shared teams with Pat Gelsinger, Intel’s current CEO.

Verma will now serve as Intel’s Discrete GPU SOC Product Lead Architect, working on all types of discrete GPU chips, and continuing the steady expansion of Raja Koduri’s team in the graphics and custom SOC product department. It will be interesting to see what comes out of this team’s work and if Intel ends up positioning itself as a strong competitor in this market that has long been shared only by AMD and Nvidia.
