Intel Fab 34 receives first machines for the Intel 4 process

Intel’s Fab 34 plant in Ireland is progressing with a redesign and expansion to support Intel Node 4. Once the process is complete, the production capacity of this plant will double.

In 2019, Intel began expanding its Fab 34 manufacturing facility in Ireland. The facility will be completed in 2023 and will double production capacity. In addition, it will be ready for the new Intel 4 lithography process, which is actually the 7nm process, but the name has been changed to match the industry standard.

The first machines for the Intel Fab 34 redesign have arrived. The first machine that has arrived combines an Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) scanner. In this machine, the silicon wafer is first coated with a precision layer. The wafer is then fed to the EUV scanner, exposed, and returned to the lithography system. Finally, it is subjected to a high-precision photonic development and cleaning system.

As mentioned earlier, the rebuild of this facility began in 2019 and will be completed in 2023 when it begins production. Intel’s Irish plant will double its production capacity. It will also improve production capacity in the Intel 4 process.

The first processor series based on this new lithography will be Intel Meteor Lake and Granite Rapids. Both processor families will be based on the Intel 4 process.

It was recently informed that the research and development of this process are going smoothly. The chip tests have passed the standards with flying colors. The SRAM, logic unit, and analog unit also meet the specifications.

Intel’s plant in Ireland is not the only one being expanded and modernized. Facilities in Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, and Malaysia are also being modernized. In addition, Intel plans to build a new factory in the United States and a new factory in Europe.
