There is bad news for users planning to upgrade their Intel Core platforms next year. A few slides about the upcoming Comet Lake processors have been released, suggesting that a new motherboard is needed by users.
Xfastest received a letter from a reader with slides “allegedly” saying that Comet Lake is equipped with a design with a maximum of 10 cores and 20 threads, but the number of pins will be LGA 1200, and that’s another socket, so we have to buy another new motherboard.
The information provided by the anonymous user does not point to a source, but viewing the slides is very similar to the style of earlier Intel data files. From one of the Comet Lake S platform images, the processor has up to 10 cores and 20 threads, Wi-Fi 802.11ax, INTEL RST 17 and more. In addition, the pin range is LGA 1200, the highest TDP 125W, and it mentions the Intel 400 chipset.
Comet Lake processors will be released in 2020 with a new socket
The reader also has another photo and believes that Comet Lake will be released in the first quarter of 2020, but he does not list the detailed model of the processor, nor can he verify or confirm the authenticity of the i9-10900KF model. In any case, the LGA 1151 has been used by Sky Lake, Kaby Lake, and Coffee Lake for several generations, and the time to retire this outlet was inevitable, but we hadn’t expected it to be so soon.
Take this information with tweezers, as Intel has not yet provided any information about the existence of a new motherboard platform for next year, but we will look out for any information that may emerge.
