HP Omen 16, 1st laptop with Ryzen 9 5900HX CPU and Radeon RX 6000M GPU

HP has unveiled the Omen 16, a notebook that will come with a 15- to 16-inch display with QHD resolution, Radeon RX 6000M or RTX 3000 graphics, and AMD and Intel processors. It looks like a very interesting battle between RDNA 2 and Ampere.

We will see the AMD Cezanne and RDNA 2 combination in laptops, thanks to HP announcing the first gaming laptop with both capabilities. The reason we say this is because we know very little about the RDNA 2 mobile graphics cards, but we may know more at Computex 2021.

First, there will be a 15-16-inch panel that comes with QHD resolution (1440p) and will be used with RTX 3000 Mobile or Radeon RX 6000M graphics cards. The graphics options will be an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 or RDNA 2 GPU, although it is not defined which models.

However, it will be interesting to know if we can mix AMD and Intel (CPU and GPU) in each, or if HP will sell us its Omen 16 with closed ecosystems (Intel and NVIDIA or 100% AMD). For processors, HP is going with either the Intel Core i7-11800H or the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX.

Both processors are 8-core and would support a maximum of 32 GB of DDR4 3200 MHz and a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 SSD (or 2 x 1 TB PCIe SSD). Since the primary graphics option is the RTX 3070, we think the closest equivalent would be an RX 6700M. However, the source talks about a possible RX 6600M configuration.

It’s worth noting that this laptop will support Resizable BAR, but not SmartShift, although we’re interested to see if we’ll be able to enable Smart Access Memory in 100% AMD configurations. In the latter case, we don’t think there will be any complications.

Another interesting aspect is the mining constraint built into the NVIDIA GPU silicon. We don’t know if the new laptops will come with a limited RTX 3000 to make Ethereum mining unprofitable, but when in doubt, we say yes.

Why? Basically, because NVIDIA has announced that the next batches will come with built-in limiting for cryptocurrencies, so any new laptops that launch with RTX 3000 Mobile could have that limit. However, this is something that can be easily verified.

All indications are that AMD will unveil the Radeon RX 6000M graphics cards at Computex 2021. We know that their conference will be held on June 1 by Lisa Su, so we will know in less than 2 weeks.

On the other hand, the HP Omen 16 will be available for purchase from June on the official website or BestBuy. Its price will start at $1049 with a lower configuration than the Ryzen 9 5900HX.

Considering the release date, it, therefore, makes more sense that the RX 6000M will hit the market next month.
