HaptX – virtual hands like a living. Smart gloves for VR

There is nothing to hide. We tasted virtual reality in its first release, and we are already expecting VR 2.0. It’s not enough to have a precise controller to hold in your hand. We want our hands to respond in a digital environment just like in a real situation.

This interaction with the three-dimensional objects seen before the VR goggles will be a real treat. We are not far from such solutions. I’ve written about some prototypes on the blog. HaptX is another proposition that makes us feel that much more natural world.

HaptX Glove

The HaptX project is expected to increase VR imprints. We feel like we were there (unless we are simulated and come to some “Inception”). Suitable gloves are required. On the market, it is the first models touching the vibration.

HaptX will try to expand this feeling. It has to be very realistic, although the equipment on the palms is quite significant. Also, the vendors promise to feel the shapes, textures, and even the temperature of objects. We will also be able to sense whether they are soft or hard. At least, that’s something! There will be no penetration into the digital space. Our hands will resist.

How it’s working? Microsites have their use here. Tiny tubes are supposed to create a kind of extra “skin.” Impression layer. Microbubbles of air will generate a touch and create a smart material. It’s a haptic “pixel.” Rapid pressure changes will mimic the feel of a touch. All in sync with the image.

Most of these points will, of course, be on fingertips because they are used to sense objects. The prototype will offer sensitivity at 2 millimeters, which is a lot more than competitive solutions. Rivals, such as Manus or Tesla suit, offer vibrations or electrodes. VRgluv, in turn, has the motor imitating the resistance.

HaptX gloves are sporadic. I hope it’s a matter of modern technology. They must be matched to the hand very accurately. The manufacturer does not conceal that the current prototype is quite heavy and still not very comfortable. But the final version will come with better parameters. Worst of all, at the moment modules need a wired connection.

The reactions provided by the mechanisms will be much more interesting than what we know now, but comfort will be most important here. Gloves will not only reflect the movements of hands and fingers. But will also provide them with contact so that VR users will receive more. Developers need to use this skillfully.

What is the technology behind this project?

The costs will make the first years of development are mainly amusement parks and telerobotics. Reducing costs will make commercial editions appear in a few years. The task of this type of invention is to improve the simulation, but also to receive entertainment. HaptX counts that in 2-3 years the costs will drop so that it will become a regular bread loaf.

The company hopes to produce full sets of such technology in the future. Combined with exoskeletons, haptic wearable, and treadmills for motion imitation, such solutions will move us to an entirely different world.
