7 nm chip roadmap from GlobalFoundries with up to 3 generations

We have another manufacturer having success in 7nm chip development. 7nm chip is going to replace the majority of processing chips in the upcoming years. GlobalFoundries has put a strong bet on skipping from the generation of 10 nm. And if everything goes according to plans, the first chips at 7 nm will arrive in the first half of 2018. But the company’s plans are more ambitious, driven by its collaboration with AMD. Has on its roadmap three generations of this platform 7LP that are best for leading and driving performance.

The first will focuses on improving yield and reducing consumption as part of the increase in the level of integration from 14 nm to 7 nm. And on process 14 LPP, using a deep ultraviolet or UVP system. Since then, GlobalFoundries will use the second generation onwards a UVP system plus an ultraviolet extreme. Or UVE focused on improving the production performance of viable chips of each wafer. Now the vendor is ready for mass production in 2019. The third generation will focus on improving the performance, consumption and surface utilization of chips, and would be ready by 2020.

7 nm Chip Success Via Gate Control of Transistor

GlobalFoundries focuses on reducing the consumption of the chips by improving the control of the gate of the transistors. This technology will allow a voltage lower than the 14LPP. And that lies between 0.65 and 1 V.

The size of the unencapsulated chip can be Of up to 700 mm2 instead of 650 mm2, which will allow improving, even more, the power of the chips. Or to make use of the space for other purposes, for example, better-integrated graphics chips,

The company promises a 60% improvement in consumption. A 40% increase in yield and a 50% reduction in the area used to move from its 14LPP process to 7LP. AMD and other partners of the company have long been working on chips at 7 nm with this manufacturing process using the design kit 0.5. And that will soon have the 0.9 in their hands and will start production in early 2018.
