The latest version of the VLC Media Player comes with many new features, reinforcing its reputation as a universal video player. After a long wait, the team has released version 3.0.0 of the VLC Media Player behind the open-source playback software (Download). The coordinated release covers platforms from Android and iOS through Windows, Linux and macOS to Chromebooks and Windows RT.

Chromecast support

Thanks to the built-in favor of Google’s Chromecast streaming solution, videos including DVDs can stream to the home TV. For this, the software must first convert the video, but in the first practical test but no problems.

The software’s new sub-base integrates hardware decoders on many platforms. So, allowing even 8K low-CPU video to play on certain smartphones, such as the Samsung S8. Also new is the support for 360-degree photos and videos as well as HEVC encoded 4K videos at 60 fps and High Dynamic Range (HDR). For real HDR playback, however, the latest version of the Microsoft Windows 10 operating system is required.

Many interfaces

If you save your videos on the home network, you can now call and play them directly via protocols such as SMB, FTP or NFS. At the same time, features for quality enthusiasts are integrated: HD audio codecs can be looped directly to an external system. Blu-ray discs also support in principle. But the decoding of the video content must take place outside the VLC Media Player.

The version with the code name “Vetinari” should receive support for as long as possible. Also, the versions for the different platforms all build on the same code. For example, the successor version 4.0 should no longer run on Windows XP and Vista or Android versions before 4.0.
