To understand the differences between LCDs and LEDs, we have to go back to the era of CRTs, cathode ray tube displays. LCD technology came to replace the old, bulky CRT TVs with the new, much thinner and lighter ones, based on a liquid crystal display and a backlight source based on fluorescent tubes, which was still based on fluorescent tubes.

The light from the fluorescent tubes passes through the liquid crystal panel, this light is guided by the electricity and depending on it and some filters it creates the desired color for each pixel. This is a straightforward explanation, but it serves us for this post. The critical thing to understand is that LCD panels need a backlight source.

The next evolution came with LED TVs. In these, the same liquid crystal panel is maintained as in the case of the LCDs, and which had made the significant difference in the transition from the CRT to the LCD. The big change in LED TVs has to do with the backlight source, as fluorescent tubes are replaced by LEDs.

Differences between LCD and LED display

This change allows you to make TVs even thinner than LCDs and lighter, the use of LED technology also will enable you to show more vivid colors and deeper blacks, with a higher level of contrast, which translates into a smoother and cleaner image. Also, this technology consumes much less energy than fluorescent tubes and is more durable. LED displays also offer wider viewing angles than those based on fluorescent tubes.

LED technology also allows panels to be produced with a higher refresh rate, in the case of monitors already reaching frequencies of 240 Hz, resulting in a very smooth picture when playing games.

As a conclusion, we can say that the difference between an LCD and an LED display is only in the backlight source. In the case of the former, the light source is based on fluorescent tubes, while in the latter, it is based on LEDs, which offer a multitude of advantages so that fluorescent tubes are no longer used.
