Display technology Researchers report breakthrough

Three times higher display technology. Researchers at the University of Central Florida are working on a technology that could help triple the resolution of today’s displays. VR glasses would also get benefit from this technology.

Researchers report breakthrough in display technology

The image points of today’s displays are composed of subpixels that glow red, green or blue. The blend of these three basic colors allows you to see the color sequences you see on screens.

The assistant professor Debashis Chanda and the physics doctoral student Daniel Franklin of the UCF have now discovered a possibility to influence the color values of the subpixels. With the help of different current voltages, they can not only change the color of individual subpixels to red, green or blue, but also changes the color gradations.

“We can make a red subpixel from a red one,” says Chanda. “This is not possible with other screens because they require three static color filters to display the full RGB color. This is no longer necessary. So a sub pixel adjusts as desired within a certain color spectrum. “

Display technology Pixels without subpixels

So with this technology the subpixels superfluous and thus allow three times smaller pixels. This means that with current displays three times as many pixels would be available: “A subpixellose display can increase the resolution drastically,” confirms by Franklin. “You have a much smaller range that can represent all three colors.”

This is made possible by a nanostructure developed by the researchers. This has an egg-like surface. Over which a skin reflective aluminum is placed. According to the researchers, the nanostructure gets easily into existing display technologies. So that existing hardware should neither replaced nor redesigned.

So currently, Chanda and Franklin are working to expand their display. After that they wish to turn to the private sector to commercialize the technology. The researchers have written a work in which they capture their discoveries. They are found here .
