With the launching ceremony of Samsung Galaxy S8 there is another interesting product to accompany. This time Samsung launches a dedicated docking station that allows to enjoy its applications on a larger screen, with a keyboard and a mouse. By using the virtual desktop application, it is also possible to access Windows applications.

As expected , Samsung presents its new product in a press conference. That analogy also comes true for 4K resolution new Samsung camera Gear 360, as well as Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 + (of which we already knew almost everything ). Now they introduces a home docking station, so called DeX.

The DeX docking station is in the wake of Continuum

The manufacturer says,” It  provides an office experience similar to that of an Android-based computer. That allows users to easily access applications, edit documents, respond to emails and ability to interface with the smartphone Bigger screen directly with keyboard and mouse.”

So this concept is not new and that is part of the continuum  of Microsoft. In the MWC 2017 at Barcelona , we already have seen many companies with such kinds of solutions.

Virtualization for Windows applications

DeX allows you to take advantage of a “redesigned” environment. This works with the resizable windows, context menus, and so on. Samsung announces that they have worked with Microsoft and Adobe teams to better adapt certain proprietary applications such as the Office suite, Acrobat Reader and Lightroom Mobile in Dex.

The dex docking station can also push the concept further for those who need access to Windows-based applications. This works by ” virtual desktops application” through which you can have these applications. To implement this feature, the manufacturer relied on partners such as Citrix, VMware and Amazon Web Services.

Here again this approach is not entirely new. Because HP had already embarked on the adventure with its Elite X3 and Workspace.

HDMI video output, USB ports and a fan

For now, only the Galaxy S8 is compatible with this solution. To enjoy its operate-ability, you have to insert the smartphone in the docking station. The latter is connected to a screen via an HDMI video output, while the mouse and keyboard can be connected via the two USB 2.0 ports.

The connector also includes a USB Type-C connector for the smartphone. This also serves to recharge it (including with fast mode). Finally, a fan is present in order to cool the whole circuitry.

It will now be necessary to wait and see how this will take place in practice, especially for virtual offices. The price of Dex is 149 euros for DeX.
