Cyberpunk 2077 gets AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution as a mod for the RX 6000

Cyberpunk 2077 is a very demanding game where using technology like NVIDIA DLSS is crucial, but CDProjekt Red doesn’t integrate AMD FSR. This mod enables it and has achieved up to twice the performance on a GTX 1080 running at 4K.

The rescaling technologies were criticized on consoles, but now they are essential to be able to play a video game with all ULTRA and in any scenario. Remember that AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution is open source, which means it can run on NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel graphics cards. In fact, it’s been tested on a GTX 1080, and what a result!

AMD FSR makes Cyberpunk 2077 fly thanks to Nexusmods

It is not an official implementation, but it is a mod created by the user PotatoOfDoom1337 which we can download at Nexusmods. CDProjekt Red teamed up with NVIDIA to develop this game and bet everything on DLSS as rescaling technology.

We can not use Ray Tracing with this mod, but we can apply a technique similar to AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0. It has already been tested on an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 in 4K resolution, achieving up to 45 FPS, this GPU is 6 years old! In short, double performance is to be expected in certain graphics cards.

Its installation is simple: you must replace the file NVIDIA DLSS.dll with the one you download in Nexusmods. As many of you may have guessed, you will not see any AMD FSR option in the Cyberpunk 2077 settings, but it will be NVIDIA DLSS the option to activate. What happens is that it will make use of the FSR 2.0 technique, instead of DLSS, which is what is behind that “.dll”.

To say that it works on Steam Deck and Linux, which is great news for those who have laptops or Steam consoles and want to enjoy more FPS. Of course, there are FSR 2.0 features that are not enabled through this mod, although the improvement over FSR 1.0 is still remarkable.

Although we already explained the difference between DLSS vs FSR, it seems that the scalers are enabled temporarily and bring a very similar mechanism. The big difference is that NVIDIA makes use of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, which requires specific hardware to apply DLSS (Tensor Cores).

AMD continues with its generic approach whereby no specific hardware is needed, which is why FidelityFX Super Resolution can be used on GPUs of all colors.

This mod could work on all games with DLSS

Watch out for this, because if it does, we could soon see an individualized implementation of this FSR mod in DLSS-only games. All new titles usually come with both technologies, but there are games like Wolfenstein Youngblood or DOOM Eternal that only come with DLSS.
