AMD is celebrating the first anniversary of its EPYC server CPU and has organized a short webinar to discuss the future of this platform, which seems to be paying off.

EPYC, AMD’s first’real’ server platform since the Opterons, has been able to compete with Intel Xeon CPUs on all fronts. Not only were they going for the flagship pieces, but they were targeting Intel at any price and in single- or multi-socket configurations. However, AMD does not want to fall asleep and is already thinking about the second generation of EPYC processors, which will be arriving in 2019.

At Computex 2018, AMD announced that it is testing the second generation of 7nm EPYC’Rome’ processors in the second half of 2018. AMD CEO Lisa Su even had a 7 nm EPYC processor in her hands. The same processors are currently in AMD’s laboratories and are being evaluated. The idea is to have them ready by 2019, a goal that looks quite possible if they are already under evaluation.

According to the red manufacturer’s plans, ROME is coming created at 7 nm and will be followed by MILAN, designed at 7 nm+ and based on the Zen 3 kernel.

AMD also mentioned that they will bring processors based on Zen 4 and Zen 5 architecture into the post-2020 era. No details were mentioned, but it seems that they are serious and have a fairly clear long-term roadmap, so Intel cannot stay in this battle.
