Compulab Fitlet2: Modular Mini PC with Apollo Lake from $ 153

Compulab has released the universally applicable Mini-PC Fitlet in its second generation format. For the Fitlet2, the manufacturer relies on Intel Apollo Lake instead of AMD. In the compact and only 2.5 to 3.4 inches high housing there is quad-core CPU and up to 16 GB of RAM that are passively cooled. Also, the FACET cards expand the functions.

Intel Apollo Lake follows on AMD Mullins.

In the predecessor, Compulab had still set on an AMD SoC in the form of the A10 Micro-6700T ( Mullins ). On the motherboard of Fitlet2, there is an Intel SoC generation Apollo Lake. The model is Atom x7-E3950, and Celeron J3455 with four cores and the Atom x5-E3930 with two cores are available. The SoCs comes with a maximum of 12 watts TDP. You have up to 16 GB DDR3L RAM at that comes with the individual SO-DIMM slot.

Fanless cooling in a modular housing

The waste heat must be handled by the housing alone because there are no fans. The case of the Fitlet2 comes in different variants. The low-power chassis is only 2.5 inches high. However, the performance chassis has good cooling fins and comes to 3.4 inches. Length and width are the same at 11.2 × 8.4 inches. Also, the industrial frame is full due to its mounting plate. The housing held together by four screws that you can dismantle easily. So, this makes component assembly easier.

I/O Ports Available

The illustrations show two USB 3.0 ports, audio jacks, status LEDs and a microSD slot in the front. The back panel comes with two USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, two RJ45 (LAN) ports, a serial port (RS232) and an external power supply socket. The power consumption is estimated at 5 to 15 watts and varies depending on the configuration and utilization. Also, there is one M.2 slot is available for SATA SSDs of 60 or 42 mm in length.

If required, additional modules called FACET cards (Function and Connectivity Extension T-Cards) provide other functions. These are inserted into a slot that is also compatible with M.2 cards with E-Key and offer, for example, four additional USB ports or double the number of Gigabit Ethernet ports to four. Others extend the storage options and allow the use of M.2 2280 or micro-SIM. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are also optional. The FACET interface includes PCIe, eDP 1.3 and I²C. A block diagram (PDF) goes into detail.

Pricing and Availability

The Fitlet2’s BIOS supports both Windows 10 and various Linux versions including Linux Mint. The latter is not surprising because a MintBox based on the same chassis comes with it. The Fitlet2 is available now at a starting price of $ 153. However, as per Fanless Tech reports, there is the immediate availability of the Fitlet2 at merchants Tiny Green PC, Amazon and Compulab in the coming weeks.
