Founded in 2014, the .NET Foundation is an independent organization dedicated to improving the development and collaboration of open source software around the .NET framework. The foundation’s projects include the .NET Compiler Platform (better known as Roslyn code, an open-source rewrite of Microsoft’s C# compiler), the ASP.NET family of open source projects, .NET Core, Entity Framework (EF), Managed Extensibility Framework (MEF), Umbraco (an open-source content management system written in C#), MSBuild and NuGet. Three years ago, it already comprised around fifty projects.

“.NET is a key component in the modern enterprise,” said Google when the Internet giant joined the .NET Foundation in 2016. Today, AWS is following in its footsteps: “AWS has long been involved in .NET, with a decade of experience using Windows and .NET on AWS. Joining the .NET Foundation is a natural step for us to invest more and be active in this community,” said Norm Johanson, senior software developer and representative of AWS at the .NET Foundation.

AWS understood the importance of .NET, and the AWS SDK for .NET was indeed the first unified AWS SDK released by AWS in November 2009….. While .NET Core was still in the early stages of development, AWS began to prepare for support so that AWS support for .NET Core was available from the first beta of the open-source version of the .NET framework. Amazon’s cloud division also released the first AWS Lambda.NET Core Runtime for serverless applications just months after the release of .NET Core 1.0.

“AWS recognizes the importance of not only joining the foundation but also taking responsibility for its goals and contributing to its achievement,” the company writes. “We take our responsibility to society seriously. AWS will continue to listen to its customers, increase its investments and contribute to the community.

AWS is part of a growing list of companies that support the foundation as corporate sponsors, including Microsoft, Google, Red Hat, JetBrains, Unity, Samsung, Pivotal, Insight, and Telerik.

For Jon Galloway, CEO of the .NET Foundation, AWS has been an active contributor to the .NET ecosystem for years and can become more involved by joining the .NET Foundation. They also support the open-source .NET community with a financial contribution to support open source projects, global meetings, member-oriented activities, and new initiatives. The .NET Foundation will also benefit from AWS’s expertise to develop plans for the growth of .NET.
