Just yesterday we reported on the new case in the dispute between Apple and Qualcomm in China, which could end in a ban on the sale of iPhones in the Asian country. But Cupertino is showing its ace up its sleeve today by announcing an update on Chinese users’ devices, “in terms of the low functionality of the two patents in question”.
The company announced its move in a press release to Reuters, in which they move a chip on the board that could free them from a possible lockout. Following Qualcomm’s request to the courts, the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR models may be banned.
This alleged patent infringement by Apple could be resolved by updating the software to resolve “all possible concerns about compliance with the order,” as stated in the statement.
With this release, it is the first time Apple has commented anything on the lawsuit as it has ignored the allegations and claims since the legal problems between both companies. According to Apple, the models offered in China are in perfect compliance with the laws.
However, Qualcomm will not make it easy for Apple. Following the press release, a Qualcomm general counsel, Don Rosenberg, said that “Apple continues to ignore and violate the orders of the Court of Fuzhou”.
According to Rosenberg, the court ruling is that Apple will stop selling and import the models in question to appear in court, but it seems Apple will ignore them.
This episode is just a remnant of a complicated lawsuit between the two American companies. While Qualcomm claims that Apple has violated the copyrights of several of its patents, Apple believes that this is only exaggerated to reach a million dollar agreement between the two parties.
