AMD seems to have a new, unprecedented APU processor for laptops up its sleeve with the Ryzen 9 5980HX.
AMD Ryzen 9 5980HX for laptops appears on the USB-IF website
The Ryzen 9 5980HX appears to have 8 cores and 16 threads, although no specifications are mentioned in this filtering. Based on the nomenclature, we assume the processor is positioned above the Ryzen 9 5900HX, which has 8 cores and 16 threads.
The Ryzen 9 5980HX could have the same number of cores as the Ryzen 9 5900HX, but with higher clock rates. It is not clear if this is a faster Cezanne CPU or perhaps a desktop variant suitable for laptops.
The chip has been seen on the USB Implementers forums and this doesn’t appear to be the only processor spotted, we also see a Ryzen 7 5700G.
The Ryzen 7 5700G appears to be a Zen 3 based APU (Cezanne) for desktop PCs. The new Ryzen desktop APUs promise significant double-digit performance gains over Renoir. This processor would have 8 cores and 16 threads, but we don’t know what clock speeds this chip will have.
AMD should launch its new Ryzen 5000-series APU processors later this year with a line of new laptops that take advantage of this new technology. As for desktop APUs, AMD just released the Ryzen 4000G series for OE, so we expect that to change to a retail release with Ryzen 5000G as well.
