New industry sources suggest that AMD plans to launch the next Ryzen 4000 based on Zen 3 at 7nm+ and the associated new X670 chipset at the end of 2020.
We’ve heard enough about these processors that have already finished their design and are based on an architecture that has been completely redesigned from scratch, even though it’s the first time we’ve heard of the chipset. The X670 will bring more PCI-E 4.0 lines and more USB 3.2 Gen2 ports. It is also rumored that it may include the native Thunderbolt 3, although this has not yet been confirmed.
As AMD confirmed long ago, this rumor confirms that the AM4 platform will have no new releases after 2020 and will migrate to a new platform. Therefore X670 and Ryzen 4000 would be the last components for AM4.
After 2020 there will be several changes, and this basic change makes sense: the most important will undoubtedly be DDR5 and PCI-E 5.0, two novelties that could be found in “AM5”. Because of these changes, especially the memory controllers will not be compatible, and new CPUs and motherboards will be needed in a completely new platform. However, four generations is a long life for the AM4 socket, and it’s much more than Intel normally has.
