We are close to the final launch of the new AMD Navi graphics cards. Before the market launch of a large silicon product, device IDs will be generated and the test and recognition tools, such as the well-known HWINFO enhanced with preliminary support.
In a recent changelog, the tool has added preliminary support for AMD Navi, an indicator that the GPU is finally ready to go and that its IDs have been finalized. The Navi GPU is the first AMD GPU programming that is not built with the GCN macro-architecture. Although we have no idea exactly what specifications AMD is built with, it is clear that it will be the first GPU architecture capable of exceeding the GCN architecture’s limit of 4096 stream processors.
According to rumors, the first AMD Navi GPU-based models are for the middle segment. Sources say that the first models will have only 40 CUs, which is about 2560 SP if the CU to SP ratio is the same as in the GCN architecture (not yet confirmed). In this case, its first models would compete fiercely in the GTX1660 Ti to RTX 2070 segment, which sells more volume. Future buyers of a GTX 1660 Ti or RX 480/580 may want to wait to see what AMD has to offer in the coming weeks.
