The popular chip manufacturer has named another Radeon graphics card after the name of a fish. This time AMD added initial support for Navy Flounder in the Linux display driver (via @Komachi), which could lead to Navi 22.

AMD Navi 22 would have been renamed Navy Flounder

Some time ago there was a rumor that AMD had discovered that users were snooping around in their controllers to find clues about new products coming to market. There were rumors that AMD started using alternative code names to hide its graphics cards from prying eyes. Sienna Cichlid, who is believed to be Navi 21, was the first example that came to light. And now AMD seems to use the code name Navy Flounder to hide the silicon Navi 22.

The Linux patch does not provide much information to speculate about the details of the Navi 22 GPU. The description is: “This patch adds initial support for Navy Flounder GPUs. If we read between the lines, the explanation implies that AMD may release several graphics cards based on the Navi 22 chip.

Similar to the Sienna Cichlid, the Navy Flounder may encounter the implementation of the Video Core Next (VCN) 3.0 and Display Core Next (DCN) 3.0 engines. This information at least suggests that the Navy Flounder is an RDNA 2 graphics card. As you may remember, current Navy graphics cards use VCN 2.0 and DCN 2.0.

Rumors suggest a “Big Navi” release in September, opening the door for a possible early announcement of a Sienna cichlid and/or a Navy flounder. We will keep you informed.
