With the Radeon RX 5700 and Radeon RX 5700 XT on the market, AMD has found the right way in the graphics sector, although we still have many surprises to discover, and Navi 12 will undoubtedly be one of the most interesting.
We had seen leaks and various rumors that caused a lot of confusion, in fact, it was assumed that Navi 12 would end up shaping the lower end of AMD, but in the end, everything seems to indicate that it will be the core graphics that we will see in the upper end. At this point, it’s important to remember that when we talk about high-end, we don’t take into account the high-quality graphics solutions, as this level will theoretically be occupied by graphics cards based on the Navi 23 core.
AMD Navi 12 will compete with the RTX 2080 and Navi 14 will face the GTX 16
The Radeon Radeon RX 5700 XT and Radeon RX 5700 are based on the Navi 10 graphics core in two variants. The first contains it completely, i.e. with its 2,560 active shaders, and the second has a trimmed version that adds 2,304 shaders. AMD has the leeway to launch a version with a larger shader cut and complete its middle range, it wouldn’t have to be stepped on with Navi 14, as this GPU will have a maximum of 1,536 shaders and, as we mentioned earlier, it will be used to breathe life into the Radeon RX 5600.
Navi 12 will stand above both and be used in AMD’s Radeon RX 5800, a range of high-end graphics cards that will compete with NVIDIA’s RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Super, as stated.
The information is still very scarce, but I am convinced that this new graphics card line will have 60 processing units (a total of 3,840 shaders), will maintain the 256-bit bus and will use GDDR6 memory, I don’t think AMD will use HBM2 memory, especially because it doesn’t need it to achieve high bandwidth (for that it has GDDR6 memory) and because it would mean a significant cost increase, which would strongly affect the retail price of this new generation.
Given the performance of the Radeon RX 5700 XT (better than the RTX 2070), the Radeon RX 5800 is expected to outperform the NVIDIA RTX 2080 by increasing the total number of shaders, TMUs, and ROPs. The launch is scheduled for late this year or early 2020. Before concluding, I’d like to remind you how the AMD graphics card catalog is configured based on the latest information we’ve seen:
- The Navi 14 GPU is used on the RX 5600 and competes with the GTX 1650, GTX 1660 and GTX 1660 Ti.
- The Navi 10 graphics core is used in the RX 5700-5700 XT, which competes with the RTX 2060, RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070.
- The Navi 12 GPU is integrated into the AMD Radeon RX 5800-5800 XT, which will compete with the RTX 2070 Super, RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Super.
Finally, according to rumors, we have GPU Navi 23, which will be used in the Radeon RX 5900 and will compete with the RTX 2080 Ti.
