Last August, Chinese PC manufacturer Zhongshan Subor announced a mysterious hybrid console/PC called Subor Z+ with an interesting data sheet. The most fascinating part of the device is that AMD has created a custom SoC for the device code-named ‘Fenghuang’.
Based on the Zen architecture instead of the Jaguar being used in consoles like Xbox One X or Playstation 4 Pro, this SoC has a CPU with 4 cores and 8 threads at 3.0 GHz, a Vega-based GPU with 24 CU @ 1300 MHz, 8 GB GDDR5, 128 GB SSD space and 1 TB HDD.
DigitalFoundry’s pre-tests have wrapped up with a new series of benchmarks from a Chinese YouTube channel, where we can see the Subor Z+ running various Windows games at over 60 fps in some of them. The graphics performance is between an RX 570 and a GTX 1060, and between the results, we have different values that show how far it goes. For example, Fire Strike Extreme (486 points), Time Spy (3288), Tomb Raider (74.81 fps with no graphics configuration clarification), Cinebench (110/581) and PUBG, which worked at about 50-55 fps at 1080p with a low level of detail.
The Subor Z+ can be used in console mode ( here a customized version of Windows is used) or in traditional PC mode. According to the official website, Subor Z+ will use Windows 10 IoT Enterprise as its base operating system, so functional aspects may be “limited” for end users. The price for this hybrid PC is 4998 RMB, which is about 730 (625 dollars if we exclude Chinese taxes).
It seems that AMD is able to create SoCs with embedded GPUs with a performance that can match the performance of a GTX 1060, which is impressive enough at present.
