AMD APU Ryzen 5000 ‘Van Gogh’ would have support for LPDDR5

There are already leaks about the AMD Ryzen 5000 low power APU called “Van Gogh”. Recently, leaks about the new generation of APUs from AMD Ryzen have surfaced. AMD Ryzen 4000 APUs have just entered the market, while desktop versions have not yet been released.

Thanks to Twitter user Patrick Schur (@patrickschur_), we now have an idea of what to expect from the “Van Gogh” line, which is aimed at power-saving devices such as laptops.

Although we reported earlier this summer about its possible existence, there was not much information about it. The APU line was expected to use Zen 2 architecture for energy efficiency and navigation GPU cores for higher graphics performance.

The tweet seems to support this idea, which also suggests that APUs can use LPDDR5 memory. This not only increases data transfer speed but also improves energy efficiency over LPDDR4, which the Ryzen 4000 line uses very efficiently.

Of course, the TDP of the APUs, which is in the range of 7.5-18 watts, would be an advantage for any lower power device using part of the Van Gogh line. For comparison, the base model of the Ryzen 4000, the AMD Ryzen 3 4300U, consumes 10-25 watts. Van Gogh will also use RDNA-2 graphics, which will be used in future Radeon graphics and on upcoming Xbox and PlayStation 5 consoles.

We don’t know when we can expect the Ryzen 5000 “Van Gogh” APU or its desk brothers “Cezanne”, as AMD has made no official announcement. Considering that AMD did not announce its Ryzen 4000 desktop APUs until the end of July, we will probably not receive any concrete information about the company’s Ryzen 5000 until shortly before its launch.

However, we are starting to see leaks that indicate that the APUs are more advanced in this process than we had anticipated.

Probably we will not see any of the announced Ryzen 5000 before 2021.
