AMD‘s roadmap for the GPU segment reveals plans for RDNA 3, RDNA 4, and CDNA architecture for data centers. The company shares the roadmap leading up to 2024, plus additional details.
RDNA 3 with a 5nm node will have 50% higher performance per watt
During Financial Analyst Day 2022, David Wang (Senior Vice President of Engineering, Radeon Technologies Group) confirmed the roadmap for the next generation of products for the consumer market (RDNA) and for the server and data center market (CDNA).
One of the most important and noteworthy revelations has to do with the next generation of Radeon graphics cards. AMD claims that RDNA 3 will offer more than 50% performance per watt over RDNA 2. This would catapult the upcoming RX 7000 series graphics cards as more efficient than Nvidia’s Ampere architecture. That’s not all, they also confirm a chiplet design, making them the first company to launch consumer GPUs with such a design.
The company is also saying that they have redesigned the architecture’s Compute Units, as well as optimized the graphics pipeline, while talking about a new generation of Infinity Cache technology.
The graphic shows the design of a GPU, which looks quite similar to aRX 6000. We do not know if AMD will keep this design or is only illustrative.
RDNA 4 architecture
AMD takes the opportunity to confirm the arrival of the RDNA 4 architecture for the year 2024, which will coincide with the Zen 5 processors. An advanced node is mentioned here, although they do not end up confirming what is 4 nm? 3 nm? We don’t know.
CDNA 3 architecture
Finally, AMD confirmed that the CDNA 3 architecture will be the world’s first exascale APU design. This is achieved by combining CPU and GPU chiplets into a single package. At the moment, it is not known which CPU architecture is the one they will be using, but they do claim that it will feature a 5nm node.
The Instinct MI300 series with CDNA 3 is going to be launched the next year.
However, AMD has not confirmed which CPU chiplets will be used in this case. This 5nm GPU architecture for data centers will be launched next year in the Instinct MI300 series of products.
