The 10 ‘apps’ that use the most data in the background

Some mobile applications continue to consume data even when the user is not using them. Just have them installed so that they automatically run right after you turn on the device and continue to act in the background to check if there are news to offer notifications or any other update.

How to save your data?

For those who spend a lot of time in environments where they are not connected to Wi-Fi networks, it is interesting to know what these apps are. And to decide if it is worth keeping them or changing them to similar ones so as not to exhaust the monthly data before time.

After analyzing data from more than three million Android devices around the world between January and March 2017, Avast has unveiled the ranking of the mobile applications that more data consumes in the background. That is the list of ten most voracious, among which we find four belonging to Facebook and two that are owned by Google.

list of applications

1. Facebook

With more than 2,000 million monthly active users, the social network par excellence is made the number one in this ranking due to the times that it tracks the news of the contacts and the interests marked by the user to send the corresponding alerts to inform notifications.

2. Instagram

The silver medal of this classification is also for an application owned by the company of Mark Zuckerberg: Instagram, which was bought by Facebook in 2012 for 765 million euros and already has 800 million monthly active users.

3. Yahoo! JAPAN

The Japanese subsidiary of one of the original Internet search engines is a company formed by Yahoo! Itself and the Japanese firm SoftBank. The official Yahoo! App Japan is a tool with many services (email, calendar, calendar, weather forecast). That must be kept up to date. Hence it consumes enough data in the background.

4. Firefox

Also, the browser that most data consumes in app format without being used is Firefox. Mozilla has already announced that Quantum (which already has the beta for iOS and Android ) will be available in November, a new version of Firefox that promises to revolutionize browsing speed without consuming more device resources.

5. The Weather Channel

The Weather Channel is often among the applications that use the most data because it relies on dynamic displays that must be continuously fed to provide weather information that varies depending on the current location, weather and time of day.

6. WhatsApp

Each day, more than 1 billion people use WhatsApp to communicate through text messages, calls and video calls. But even though it’s not being used, this Facebook-owned app still consumes background data.

7. Google Chrome

So, the second of the browsers that appear in this classification is Chrome. Aware of this, Google provides some recommendations that help reduce the consumption of data from this application on Android devices. As for iPhones and iPads, the company notes the following: “This feature is not available at this time due to platform restrictions. If Apple makes changes to [the rendering engine] WKWebView to allow ‘Reduce data,’ we will include this function again. ”

8. DU Battery Saver

Although it is an application that helps increase the battery life, the fact is that DU Battery Saver can come out on the other hand, since it is another application that starts to consume data just after turning on the mobile device, according to the Avast report.

9. Facebook Lite

With this “light” version of Facebook happens something similar to DU Battery Saver, i.e. what the user saves on the one hand (in this case on storage space, especially) ends up paying even without opening this app, with data of its tariff. Of course, the Lite edition will always be a better option than the traditional Facebook application for those who do not want to give up having this social network on the mobile.

10. Google Play Store

Close this ranking of the most voracious apps that act as parasites one that is essential for Android devices, since it is the Google app store itself: Play Store.

The classification is very different if we focus on the applications that consume more data while they are executed by the users. In fact, none of the above appears in this other ranking of Avast, ordered from more to less voracious:
