Zhaoxin KaiXian KX-6000: China entering into the X86 processor market

China is making terrific progress in the processor market. That reflects from the news of Hi-Tech processors introduced these days. Today, a Chinese manufacturer announces Zhaoxin KaiXian KX-6000 processors. However, that is far behind the latest entries from Intel or AMD. This week, in a joint venture between Via Technologies and the Chinese government, Zhaoxin presented its new KaiXian KX-6000 CPU, an x86-based SoC with an 8-core configuration at 3 GHz.

The Zhaoxin KaiXian KX-6000 is the successor to the KX-5000 CPU introduced earlier this year. The two chips integrate eight x86-64 cores with 8 MB L2 cache, a DirectX 11.1 compatible iGPU with an updated display driver, a two channel DDR4-3200 memory controller and modern I/O interfaces (PCIe, SATA, USB, etc.).

The main differences between the KaiXian KX-5000 and the KaiXian KX-6000 are in frequency and manufacturing technology, as the former is manufactured using TSMC’s 28 nm manufacturing process and operates at up to 2 GHz, while the latter is manufactured using TSMC’s 16 nm technology and achieves 3 GHz. Zhaoxin claims that the Kaixian KX-6000 provides computing power comparable to Intel’s seventh-generation Core i5 processor, which is a quad-core CPU.

The manufacturing process allowed Zhaoxin to make the KaiXian KX-6000 smaller than its predecessor, which will ultimately reduce manufacturing costs. The two processors use different HFCBGA packages, so they cannot use the same motherboards.

The Zhaoxin KaiXian KX-6000 is based on the LuJiaZui microarchitecture, which is an evolution of the WuDaoKou microarchitecture that powers the KX-5000 processor introduced in early 2018. LuJiaZui is a superscalar design compatible with x86-64 that supports contemporary instructions such as SSE 4.2 and AVX as well as virtualization and encryption technologies. Zhaoxin has not announced when it will begin commercial delivery of its KaiXian KX-6000 processors as it is now only showing its picture.
