YouTube team is conducting a new experiment to help users discover new content.
As Tom Leung, director of product management at YouTube explains, they plan to test the dynamics of a new Explore tab with Instagram-style.
In the new tab, users will find new videos and channels that are based on the content they have seen but with a more comprehensive perspective. In other words, the user’s browsing history on YouTube will be taken as a reference, but the proposals will be expanded and recommended to users.
In this way, they will be able to learn about new channels or content that they have not seen, as it did not specifically fall within their sphere of interest. It’s a dynamic similar to Instagram, which offers a “For you” tab with content, and other suggestions based on a number of themes.
It tries to be a practical solution for those users who don’t want to miss new videos of their favorite topics but feel overwhelmed by the amount of content that appears every day. According to Leung, this experiment will be tested on only 1% of iPhone users. They will then consider whether to extend the new tab to other platforms and to other users.
