The Radeon Vega 20 is on the way. The good news is that this is a new generation of AMD GPUs. And the bad news is that it will only reach the high-performance professional computer market. There are however technological innovations that are announced for the Vega 20 which are of special interest. One example is that the Vega 20 will have a new interface called XGMI. This is a high-speed connection.
Because XGMI provides fast peer-to-peer connectivity, it is based on Infinity Fabric, which is the unified form of AMD’s universal connectivity. Also, processors use it. XGMI is AMD’s alternative to NVIDIA NVLink for connecting GPUs. And the competition between NVIDIA and AMD also reaches the enterprise segment. NVIDIA has traditionally played a greater role in this area.
That was the discovery of Phoronix, which was particularly attentive in finding a new entry in the AMD Linux driver for GPUs. These Vega 20 graphics cards are designed for use in servers and workstations, which makes Linux the first operating system to support these new GPUs, which will also work in parallel to increase computing power.
