100 million frames per second (fps). That’s the speed at which one of the most sophisticated high-resolution video cameras created to date records. However, its applications have nothing to do with entertainment, since its objective is to contribute to the improvement of current technologies for the treatment of various types of cancer.

UK Business Secretary Greg Clark announced the launch of the Rosalind Franklin Institute, where they hope to develop this ultra-fast camera for imaging tissue with higher sensitivity and resolution than any other tool currently available.

According to the institute’s official statement, the chamber will allow the development of new techniques where light and sound are used to detect and treat diseases, including some of the most lethal forms of cancer, such as tumors of the pancreas or brain. The use of the technology would have minimal side effects for patients.

This tool will be developed through a collaboration between an academic team at Oxford University and a UK startup called Invisible Vision, specializing in high-resolution imaging and high-speed recording. On completion of the project, the chamber will be located at the Rosalind Franklin Institute and will be available to researchers from the UK and around the world.
