Windows 10X and the Surface Neo, delayed for 2021 and 2022 respectively

In recent days, the leaks around Windows 10X have multiplied. The latest rumors suggest a possible delay. The OS is not expected before next year.

The Windows 10X announced last year will probably take a long time. This operating system will accompany the introduction of a new product category, the devices with two screens, or a folding screen. The first presentation took place when the Surface Neo tablet was announced in 2019.

Windows 10X quickly fascinated fans because of its overall concept, philosophy, and design

Since then, many people have asked Microsoft to help them find their way to Windows 10. Microsoft has been discreet in its development. However, the giant has stipulated that Windows 10X should not remain “exclusive” to devices with two screens. Single-screen solutions will also be affected.

“With Windows 10X, we’ve created a flexible operating system, and this flexibility has allowed us to focus on single-screen Windows 10X devices that harness the power of the cloud to enable our customers to work, learn and play in new ways. These single-screen devices will be the first Windows 10X print we ship to our customers, and we will continue to work with our OEM partners to find the right time to bring dual-screen devices to market.”

Microsoft’s strategy around this new category of two-screen devices seems to need more time. As a result, the Surface Neo tablet is likely to be left behind just like Windows 10X.

"Windows 10X", Windows 10X and the Surface Neo, delayed for 2021 and 2022 respectively,

According to a new report, the introduction of Windows 10X will be postponed until spring 2021. Furthermore, it would only affect cameras with one screen. These would target the consumer, professional, and education markets. Deployment would then continue in spring 2022, this time with the arrival of the first dual-screen devices.

Windows 10X will allow Microsoft to try its luck again at making Win32 applications disappear. We can expect an environment dedicated to UWP applications only. At least it will be the first approach without support for Win32 software. We will have to wait until 2022 with the arrival of dual-display devices to hope for the return of this support.
